Participation in Democracy

The most famous democratic revolution in human history was the American revolution. Compare this image of Patriots pulling down a statue of King George with U.S. soldiers pulling down a statue of Sadam Hussein as the culmination of "exporting democracy" to Iraq.

Course Design:

To learn essential social studies skills such as critical understanding of history and the political and social institutions produced by history, as well as civic responsibility, Participation in Democracy will explore education and citizenry and their importance in the life of our nation.  Students will consider responsibilities that connect them to education and war, and the class will strive to keep our understanding of America within multi-national and global contexts.

In addition to selected readings, students will also complete weekly current events, a civic essay, movie or music assignments, and a research paper.
