After reading Chapter 1, you will be able to:

Explain the difference between pre-history and history by including the different types of evidence for historical existence.

Explain the differences between the following statements: “Animals adapt themselves to environment” and “Hominids adapt environment to themselves”. Be certain to define hominid, use of tools, language, complex cooperative social structure.

Describe a complex society by including its time period; its beginning historical context of hunting and foraging; the transition from hunting and foraging to domestication of animals and organized agriculture; the rise of social and material changes that make up a complex society.

Explain why homo erectus and homo sapiens fall into time period 1.

Explain why Africa is important for understanding human migration.

Identify the name used to refer to the old stone age and explain why the age falls within time period 1.

Identify the name used to refer to the new stone age and explain why the age falls within time period 1.

Explain the impact of agriculture on human life in terms of both migration and demography.

Explain the difference between Neolithic revolution and agricultural transition.

Locate on maps and describe historical significance of the Natufian society of the eastern Mediterranean; the Jomon society of central Japan; the Chinook society of the American Pacific northwest.

Locate on maps and describe historical significance of Jericho and Çatal Hüyük

Define craft industries (pottery, textiles, metallurgy).

Explain the characteristic that gave rise to social class and social structures

Explain the significance of Venus figurines.
